Periodontal (Gum) Therapy

The first line of defense in combatting periodontal disease is scaling and root planing, which involves removal of plaque and tartar (calculus) below the gumline with subsequent smoothing of the tooth’s root surface.

A variety of oral rinses may be utilized, either prescription or over-the-counter. In some cases, antibiotic therapy (localized or systemic) may be indicated.

A new, non-surgical treatment modality named the PerioProtect System is available; mouthguard-like trays deliver low-dose medication below the gumline to help eliminate disease-causing bacteria.

The last line of defense is gum surgery. Successful periodontal therapy depends on daily, diligent home care: a patient’s responsibility.
